Official L4D 2 Boycott

The backlash for Left For Dead 2 continues, and the community group at the cusp of it all (L4D2 Boycott) is now 31,000+ members strong.

Wonder what is at the heart of it all? Read the list of demands and let us know if you think it’s warranted.

WE RECOGNIZE:
-Valve is a company with financial needs and cannot be expected to survive without the release of new games.
-Judgment cannot be passed on the quality of Left 4 Dead 2 until its release.
-Left 4 Dead was, and is, a quality game which deserves the praise of the entire gaming community.

WE ARE COMMITTED:
-To holding Valve to its promise of free, continual updates to Left 4 Dead in order to build and sustain the community.
-To keeping the Left 4 Dead community together in order to improve the quality of online gaming.
-To supporting the model of continual updates Valve has set forth with its staple products like Team Fortress 2.

WE BELIEVE:
-The release of Left 4 Dead 2 as a stand-alone sequel will split the communities and decrease the quality of multiplayer gaming.
-The announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a stand-alone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead.
-Left 4 Dead has not yet received the support and content which Valve has repeatedly stated will be delivered.
-The release of Left 4 Dead 2 will make Left 4 Dead an obsolete purchase and inferior piece of software after only one year since release.

WE REQUEST:
-That Valve honor its commitment to release ongoing periodic content for Left 4 Dead.
-That Left 4 Dead 2 not be released as a stand-alone, full-priced sequel but as either a free update to Left 4 Dead or an expansion with full compatibility with basic Left 4 Dead owners.
-That Left 4 Dead owners be given discounts for Left 4 Dead 2, should it be released as premium content.
Therefore, we – the members of this Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott – promise to abstain from the purchase of Left 4 Dead 2 until our requests are addressed.

An ill-conceived boycott that is doomed to fail. Valve has already stated their commitment to updating L4D, and have outlined details for the cross-compatibility of both games.

Has Steam, CS:S, and TF2 really shifted our expectations so much in such a short time? In the very recent past we wouldn’t have batted an eyelash at a speedy sequel to a good game, we would have been thankful!

Having said that though, I will wait until it’s initial price drops. Free weekends and nifty sales are another thing I’ve come to expect from Valve.

  2.   Acid Caribou Says:

I totally agree, Valve dosn’t exactally have a reputation of “milking it” to overcome.
Matt from AGN said it best, people are willing to pay 60 bucks a year for a roster update in sports games, but we balk at this?

  3.   Caleb8 Says:

ever heard of give them an inch and they will take a mile? They saw what TF2 got and they were just expectant of the same amazing treatment.

They didn’t hope for it the EXPECTED it and got super pissed off when they did not support it with a bunch of free stuff, they got the survival pack and they barely even noticed hell, they hated the damn thing.

  4.   Barracuda Says:

Well, my opinion, this was definitely not a good boycott, L4D has had plenty of time in the spotlight and has had many Updates on PC that were huge in the gaming perspective (if you look at the Xbox version they should be the ones pissed off, because while Steam is just giving us a bunch of free shit Xbox guys get nothing lol, glad i dont have an Xbox) but i think its a great time to come out with a great sequel for a great game, ill prolly buy it (might wait for a sale)

I got asked to do advertising for this group which I respectfully turned down.

I find the whole idea of boycotting a game/company in this rather funny. Children complaining about not getting everything for free. I’m still waiting for the boycotts of NHL, Madden, NFL etc. As Acid mentioned already 60 gets you an updated roaster.

I SHALL BOYCOTT! MY 4 STEAM ACCOUNTS SHALL NOT BUY IT!

    ^^ hi Lumiere

  7.   Sandman[SA] Says:

Maybe I have missed something because Valve is still trying to pedel L4D as a game of the year edition. If it made game of the year edition, then that would suggest that L4D is still in it’s prime. So why release a sequel to a game that is still doing well and less then a year old? Makes no sense at all.

I don’t really think a boycott will even work. But as it is I am not working and am having fun in L4D so I will just stick to that. It does seem like the boycott might have done something though? There are new campaigns coming out.

    (Kodiac, you know Lumiere?)
